Stockholm: In a daring daytime robbery, thieves stole priceless gold and jewel-encrusted crowns dating from the early 1600s from a cathedral in Sweden before hopping on bicycles and escaping using a speedboat.

The heist took place at Strangnas Cathedral on Tuesday noon and involved two men, reported Associated Press. The stolen artefacts included a gold crown and an orb dating to 1611 there were made for King Karl IX’s funeral, as well as a jewel-encrusted crown dating to 1625 that was used in Queen Kristina’s funeral.

The artefacts were on display at an exhibition held inside the cathedral, and visitors were inside when they were taken by the thieves by smashing the security case. “The alarm went off when the burglars smashed the security glass and stole the artefacts,” said Catharina Frojd, a spokeswoman for the 14th century cathedral.

Police sent out a helicopter and boat to hunt for the thieves but found nothing. Divers were also looking for clues along the shores of Lake Malaren, Sweden’s third largest freshwater lake. The stolen artefacts have great value but authorities wondered whether the thieves would be able to sell them, given their high uniqueness and visibility.
