Life is full of twists and turns. In certain cases, the twists and turns land us in worse case scenarios. Yet, if we are ready to work hard, we might well land up successful. It was such a scenario that happened in the life of Rahul Narvekar, the Chief Executive Officer of the NDTV Ethnic Retail.

Addressing participants at the Third International Conference on International Marketing in Asia Pacific – Issues and Challenges here on Saturday, he traced his career graph from a non-entity to a successful professional.

From an economically weak background, he started his career as a salesman to support his education. The Mumbaikar was forced to discontinue his education by his professors for “frequently asking questions”. “I had to rely entirely on marketing for my bread and butter,” he said.

Joining a television shopping network later, Rahul’s ideas saw him reach new heights in his career. Yet, each of his success was hit by a failure. “Then I had an idea of advertising through cable televisions and was helped by a cable TV operator in that field. There too I faced failure because of ego clashes between partners even after gaining a lot of money,” he shared.

Rahul had to pick himself again and start working on newer ideas. His wife Pallavi Rao’s career as a Radio Jockey helped him while he was working as a manager in shopping complex. “My boss asked me for an idea to install music system in the complex. I sought my wife’s radio company for the job. This gave me promotion in the job,” he narrated.

His wife’s story further inspired him to face all the hardships and succeed in life. “My wife lost her voice because of an ailment in her vocal cord. However, she was determined to speak again and was back again hosting shows. This gave me the confidence that was required,” said Rahul.

In October 2009, Rahul Narvekar co-founded FashionandYou, to create a coveted fashion and luxury brands ecommerce store with a European Entrepreneur, Oliver Jung. This saw Rahul scale greater heights in terms of profit. “I first caught the attention of the market leader and that led to others. This is the success formula to top the market. You catch the leader and others would automatically follow you. Suddenly, all those who were not ready to even consider me, started queuing up,” he said.

Further advising students, the practical entrepreneur said that students should try to be practical as a practical mindset helped better than theory.
