Hunger strike held for Avarampalayam rail overbridge

People from around Avarampalayam today held a one-day hunger strike for their long-standing demand of a rail overbridge, a promise made by the government earlier.

Traffic blocks have become the order of the day as around 40 trains pass through the area daily and an overbridge connecting Ganapathy and Avarampalayam areas can be the only solution to this.

If the district administration and corporation did not take steps immediately, the DMK would rope in all political parties and stage a protest, said Singanallur legislator N Karthik.

Though the government had said earlier that the overbridge would be constructed, till date the district administration has not taken a step towards fulfilling this, people alleged.

During the earlier DMK regime, 36 railway flyover projects were announced, Karthik said. During the last seven years of the AIADMK rule, work has not started on even one of these, he added.

Despite land acquisition for the project already over, it was callousness on the part of the district administration, he told mediapersons.

More than 100 people participated in Thursday’s hunger strike.
