SC appointed team inspects Padmanabha Swamy temple, says Moolavigraha is safe

The committee appointed by Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the ‘Moolavigraha’ of the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple was safe.
The team, headed by amicus curiae Gopal Subramaniam, conducted an inspection at the temple, including the Moolavigraha (presiding deity of Sree Vishnu made of 12,008 Saligramas) today. The inspection follows reports of damage to the Moolavigraha.
The team, comprising tantris, vastu experts and temple representatives, also inspected construction work going on in the temple.
On Tuesday, the committee members called on the Royal family of Travancore and held talks with them on the opening of the Vault B of the Padmanabha Swamy Temple. The royal family has the traditional right over the temple.
The Supreme Court had directed the team to open the vault. However, the royal family said they would not give consent to open the same. “We will stand by the decision of the temple priest who has opposed the opening of the Vault B in view of the century-old belief,” a member of the royal family said.
Gold, diamond and other precious articles worth more than Rs. 1 lakh crore was found in one of the vaults six years ago. There are six chambers in the temple – marked from A to F, out of which two are unlocked twice a year, and others everyday.
