Student detained under Goondas Act begins fast in jail

Journalism student Valarmathi, who was detained under Goondas Act, today began indefinite hunger strike in
the Central Jail.

Valarmathi of Periyar University was arrested from Salem in June on grounds of distributing pamphlets against various projects, including the Kathiramangalam hydro carbon and Neduvasal ONGC ones. She was detained under Goondas Act has been lodged in the central jail here.

Her hunger strike is for immediate stoppage of work on the projects, besides a petrochemical one in Cuddalore, as also withdrawal of charges against her under Goodas Act. She has also demanded an end to the police intelligence wing threatening those who visit her in jail.

Police said Valarmathi refused to take food in the morning and afternoon.
