Heavy rain lashing across the Nilgiris over the last two days has left low-lying areas inundated and rain water
entered into nearly 100 houses in Valamulla near Devala in Gudalur in the Nilgiris.

People were rescued and taken to safer places. The rise in water levels followed the collapse of a bridge, official sources said.

For the first time in the last few years, rivers, lakes and ponds in several areas were flowing in full. Holiday was declared for schools in the area, officials said.

Two persons sustained minor injuries after their house partially collapsed in Pandalur in Nilgiris district.

Flood alert has already been sounded in Mettupalayam, some 40 km from here, following the release of surplus water from Pilloor Dam, as Bhavani river is in spate. Those living on the banks have been asked to move to safer places.

Traffic was affected on main thoroughfare in the city and suburbs, they said.

Meanwhile, the administration has declared holiday today for schools in Valparai, following incessant rain for the last two days.
