Members of all major opposition parties, barring the BJP, on Monday staged demonstration in all the 100 wards in the city, protesting against the proposed increase in the deposit for water connections and also the Coimbatore Corporation’s failure to provide basic amenities across the city.

The workers of DMK, CPI-M, CPI, MDMK and VCK participated in the protest. They said basic amenities such as water supply and maintenance of the entire city were very poor, as there was no elected body to monitor the progress, due to delay in civic elections.

“The people have been burdened additionally by the Corporation. It is charging the public for collecting garbage, for under ground drainage connections and has also increased the deposit amount for drinking water connection,” DMK MLA, N. Karthik, who led the protest in Avarampalayam, said.

The activists raised slogans against the Corporation and sought immediate withdrawal of the hike in deposit and cautioned to intensify their agitation, if it failed to act.

Scores of protesters were arrested for organising demonstration without permission in several wards.
