Members of Aam Admi Party today petitioned the District Collector to take necessary steps to protect Valankulam lake.

Party members met District Collector TN Hariharan and complained that the district administration was not doing enough to protect the lakes, particularly Valankulam near Sungam here.

The petitioners alleged that construction debris, sewage and waste were being dumped in the lake and on its shore, especially late at night. This could create health problems and also destroy the aquatic ecosystem.

It was the third time they were petitioning the district authorities, said AAP district convener S Akbar. He alleged that there had been no proper response to their petitions submitted to the the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation too.

The delegation requested the Collector to visit the lake and take necessary steps to clear it of encroachments and waste and restore it.
