Bid to burn VCK chief’s effigy: Over 100 arrested

About 120 activists belonging to fringe Hindu outfits were arrested in the city and Tirupur, while attempting to burn the effigy of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader, Thol. Thirumavalavan for his alleged remarks for demolishing temples.

According to police, 16 activists of Bharat Sena were arrested here when they came with an effigy and attempted to burn it. However, police prevented it. Some of them managed to tear a photograph of Thirumavalavan, they said.

Nearly 100 workers or Hindu Munnetra Kazhagam were arrested, when they attempted to burn the effigy in Tirupur.

Meanwhile, in a statement E.R. Eswaran of Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi expressed anguish over Thirumavalaan’s remarks at a public meeting in Chennai on December 6 that Buddha Vihar should be built after demolishing temples. He said leaders should avoid using and criticising caste, religion or places of worship for getting political mileage.
