Voting for the Radhakrishnan Nagar (R.K.Nagar) Assembly constituency witnessed over 60 per cent voting on Thursday, said Election Commission officials.

The election, that began on a brisk note at 8 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m., was necessitated following the death of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on December 5 last year, who represented the constituency.

The major contenders are E. Madhusudhanan (AIADMK), N. Marudhu Ganesh (DMK), T.T.V. Dinakaran (Independent) and K. Nagarajan (BJP). There were reports of malfunctioning of an electronic voting machine (EVM) at one polling booth, officials said. Over 2.28 voters have decided the fate of 59 candidates in one of the smallest constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

The counting of votes will take place on December 24.

Elaborate security arrangements were made with around 15 companies of para-military forces and over 2,500 security personnel and several closed circuit television cameras, flying squads and static surveillance teams being deployed.
