Coimbatore: City police is to have a traffic flying squad to reduce the number of fatal accidents and control speeding vehicles at night.

Traffic DC Suijt Kumar said, “Traffic police are not commonly seen during late hours and early morning. This is also time when traffic violations like speeding and use of loud silencers in vehicles usually happen. Hence, a flying squad of traffic men will be launched soon to book cases under Motor Vehicle Act.”

He said the aim was also to reduce the number of fatal accidents in city. The squad will be mainly present in Race Course region and also in Avinashi Road, since those were the stretches where most of such cases were reported.

“We are also aiming to bring down the number of fatal accidents in the city. We recently introduced barricades at outer city limits to control speeding and that is giving positive results. Approximately for about the past 15 days no fatal accident has been reported in traffic east and traffic west regions.”

The DC also said approximately 20 new traffic signals were planned to control speeding. “Signals are planned at important junctions to reduce speeding. For instance, four signals are planned between SITRA and Chiniyampalayam junction in Avinashi road,” he said. New signal points were planned in Trichy road as well.
