COIMBATORE: Five persons, including two women, were drowned in two separate incidents in Salem district.

According to police, three persons – M. Nagaraj, his wife N. Prema and a relative Sukanya, – who were part of a tourist group, went for a bath in a well attached to a quarry at Kandashramam near Ammapet. The three went deep into the pond. As none of them knew swimming, they struggled to come out. Efforts to pull them out proved futile and they drowned, police said.

Police from Kichipalayam rushed to the spot, fished out the bodies and sent to Salem Government Hospital at for post mortem.

In the second incident, two students, both 10th graders, went for learning swimming in a pond at Kuzhandampatti, some 30 km from Salem.

Vignesh and Goutham, without realising the depth of the pond, were suddenly caught in the slush.

Their parents, who came searching for them, noticed their dress and shoes on the banks and informed both police and fire departments, who rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies and sent them for autopsy.
