COIMBATORE: In order to increase the acceptance of transgenders by the society, especially young generation, students of Team Yugam of a private college launched a ‘Food Truck” run by transgender cooks here on Tuesday.
The truck ‘Trans Pride’ was flagged off at the campus of Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) by its Joint Correspondent Shankar Vanavarayar and Rotary Coimbatore Central President, N Damodharan at a function.

The food truck is run by three transgenders – Tasneem a social activist with over 15 years of cooking experience, Suchitra, an expert in Indian Cuisine and Yamini. Various food items like sandwiches, frankies, burgers, pakodas, biriyani, juices are being prepared in the fully equipped truck and sold.

The truck will be visiting various colleges for a fortnight from Tuesday where they will be selling eatables, with a team of KCT students going along with facilitate arrangements.

“The society has to evolve to accept and give transgenders their due role and it is commendable that KCT students have come forward to share their expertise and time to solve social problems,” Vanavarayar said and stressed the need for giving greater opportunities for transgenders in all sectors including education.

Damodharan said that Rotary was glad to support this initiative of students to make the society more inclusive by giving transgenders a due role and will follow up this initiative and help in making it into a successful commercial venture in the days to come.
