COIMBATORE: A large number of school students participated in a lake safari on Friday.

Organised by Environmentalist Foundation of India, the aim of the three-hour safari was to create an awareness about wetlands in Coimbatore among the students.

The students were taken to Muthannan Kulam, Selvampathy Lake, Narasampathy Lake, Krishnampathy Lake and Selvachintamani Lake. “The geology, hydrology and biodiversity of each lake was explained to the students,” said a press release.

According to Sanjay Prasad, Chief Coordinator of EFI, the safaris play an important role in increasing the awareness level among the students. “It is an effort to increase the involvement of general public. We also organise cleaning up of lakes during week ends. These guided trips will encourage the public to involve themselves in saving the water bodies and conserving them,” he said.
