COIMBATORE: Coimbatore is the right place to start any green initiative thanks to its extensive green cover, according to S. Ramasubramaniam, Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore circle.

He was addressing a a function where four city schools were presented the Greenest School Campus Awards on Wednesday by Kovai Green League at Brookefields Mall here.

Presenting the awards to Chinmaya International Residential School, Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary school, Corporation SRP Ammaniammal Girls Higher Secondary School and Corporation Primary School, Kallimadai, Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. Vijayakarthikeyan said the awards would encourage the students to take more interest in nature conservation. “The Corporation will launch bio degradable carry bags soon to reduce the usage of plastic bags in the city,” he said.

Activist P.K. Selvaraj, who received the Green Hero 2018 award for his efforts towards revival and conservation of water bodies, particularly Kousika river, said waste management should start from home. “Every individual has the responsibility to take care of his surroundings, water bodies and trees,” he added.

Kovai Green League is a forum initiated by Brookefields, Bosch, WWF – India, Rotary Club of Coimbatore, and Suryan FM to create awareness on green cover and environment conservation by working with school management, and school Students in the city.
