COIMBATORE: “A true acharya is one who not only lives by the teachings of our scriptures, but also makes others follow the same,” said Swami Sankarananda Saraswathi, Acharya of Arsha Vidya Gurukulam.

He was addressing a gathering, where members of over 25 social and religious organisations came together to pay homage Sri Jayendra Saraswathi of Kanchi Mutt at Kikani School auditorium on Sunday.

Recalling the late pontiff’s association with Sankara Eye Hospitals, its Managing Trustee Dr. R.V. Ramani said the acharya showed utmost concern for common man which went beyond caste, creed and religion.

“Sankara Eye Hospitals has performed free surgeries to over 17 lakh people. It was due to acharya’s efforts that the institution has become famous at the national level,” he said.

According to Ravi Sam of Veda Padashala, the guidance offered by the late religious head was immense. “A large number of people, including me, have benefited from his guidance. His contribution in preserving our cultural ethos cannot be measured,” he added.

Marudhachala Adigalar, junior pontiff of Perur Aadhinam recalled the role played by Sri Jayendra Saraswathi in unifying several heads of Mutts across the country to champion the cause of Hinduism. “Several ancient temples were renovated under his leadership,” he said.
