Pollachi Junction, located about 35 kilometres from Coimbatore, turns a glorious 100 today. The historic station comes under the Palakkad Railway Division. The station has one more feat to be proud of – soon, regular train service will begin on its newly laid broad gauge lines.

The 54.7 kilometre long broad-gauge line was constructed at a cost of Rs.350 crores.

The station was inaugurated on October 15, 1915 when train services first began on the Podanur-Pollachi section. It was then extended up to Dindigul in November 19 1928. Another significant development occurred when the Palakkad-Pollachi line was opened on April 1, 1932. Since then, until its closure on December 10, 2008, the line was extensively used for trade and pilgrimage tours.

Southern Railways had spent Rs.25 crores to reconstruct and renovate the building, including railway platforms, subways, and shelters. The goods yard was also renovated at a cost of Rs.2 crores.

The centenary celebrations were attended by C. Mahendran, M.P from Pollachi; M.K. Muthukaruppannasamy, MLA; Krishna Kumar, Pollachi Municipal Chairman; Rashmi Sidhharth Zagade, Sub-Collector Pollachi; and, Mohan A. Menon, Additional Divisional Railway Manager.

Mr. Menon said that efforts are on to bring more trains to the route, but the results will have to wait for the local body elections in Kerala to end.
