Members of the People’s Welfare Front (PWF) staged a massive demonstration in Coimbatore against the road conditions in most parts of the city. The roads were dug up to lay the Underground Drainage (UGD) pipes.

Activists of the CPI, CPIM, MDMK and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal raised slogans condemning the abnormally slow pace with which the roads were being re-laid. This has created traffic congestion, health hazards, and very unsafe roads. The protesters also demanded that the UGD charges be reduced.

The demonstrators were led by the CPI district secretary, K.M. Selvaraj; MLA M. Arumugam; CPI-M district secretary V. Ramamurthy; former MP P.R. Natarajan; MDMK Urban district secretary R.R. Mohankumar; and VCK district secretary Ilakkiyan.
