Coimbatore: Food Safety Department today seized and destroyed nearly 800 kgs of artificially ripened mangoes being sold in the fruit market in the city.
Based on the complaints from the customers about the taste of mangoes, the department officials carried out raids in over 10 shops in the market in Ukkadam and seized mangoes, ripened with carbide stone, police said.
Such mangoes give stomach related ailment and are not fit for consumption. The officials destroyed the mangoes by pouring some chemicals, they said.
