Regional body to partner with NABARD on water harvesting system

Coimbatore: In order to bridge the gap and also to bring about a holistic system of water harvesting through water shed concepts, Kongu Global Forum (KGF) will forge a partnership with NABARD to mitigate the difficulties being faced in water related areas, in the region, comprising seven districts.
Kongu region although, a water surplus region at one point of time, has gradually started deteriorating both in terms of annual rain fall caused by massive deforestation as well as aquifer depletion.
In order to forge a partnership to reverse the situation, representatives of KGF, a body of representatives from seven districts, held discussions with NABARD Deputy Managing Director R Amalorpavanathan and other senior officials today, to work aggressively through water shed programme in all the 7 districts namely (Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur, Nilgiris, Salem, Erode
and Namakkal), KGF Convenor, Vanitha Mohan said.
The broad areas agreed during the meeting included conducting a stakeholders consultation meeting to evolve a broad strategy, organize a workshop to kick start the programme, identify suitable agencies in all the districts ando plan and execute projects to work closely with NABARD and also.to finalize a comprehensive plan comprising of afforestation, water shed management, spring spots rejuvenation and sewage treatment.
The State of Tamil Nadu is one of the most water stressed States in the country. With utilization of surplus water to the tune of 95% and ground water exploitation (85%), more than 139 blocks out of 386 blocks are categorized as over exploited.
Deforestation, poor land use practices, encroachment of water bodies, over pumping of ground water and over obstruction of surface water are some of the major issues facing the Kongu region, she said.
It was ironical that the region has received unprecedented rains during summer, but not even 10 per cent of the water has been harvested. A lot of gap in areas of water harvesting and conservation has flushed the precious rain water down the drain, Vanitha Mohan said.
