COIMBATORE: With the onset of South West monsoon, leading to copious rains across in Nilgiris, Tirupur and Coimbatore districts, major water bodies are brimming to the full, necessitating the administration to sound flood alert to the people living on Bhavani River.

The administration has already sounded alert on Sunday, as the storage level in Pilloor dam touched 94 feet, as against the full capacity of 100 feet, requiring to release 12,000 cusecs of water, which will flow into Bhavani river.

With incessant rains in the catchment areas in Avinashi in Tirupur and Kunda in Nilgiris districts, the level in the dam rose to 97 feet this afternoon, forcing to release 16,000 cusecs by opening four sluices, part of which used to generate power.

This is likely to result in danger of Bhavani in spate in the night hours and people are asked to move to safer places, even as steps are taking to meet any eventualities, with District Collector T.N. Hariharan inspecting the area on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Noyyal river, the lifeline of five neighbouring districts, which was dry for the last few years, started flowing across the districts, including Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur.

The administration has already warned the public from entering and taking bath in Kovai Kutralam, a falls on foothills of Vellingiri, as water was gushing down from the top.

Another major tourist attraction, Monkey falls in Valparai, also closed for the visitors, due to heavy rains being experienced in and around the area, fearing for flash floods, even as schools and educational institutions in Valparai remained closed on Monday.
