As many as 600 saplings were planted in and around the Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI) campus of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research here on Tuesday.

The saplings were donated by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department as a part of its ‘Green Campus Initiative’ under the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project, which envisages the planting of saplings outside forest areas.

Addressing the gathering during the occasion, Bakshi Ram, Director of SBI, said that all the vacant spaces in the campus would be given for planting saplings to make the campus greener.

“All the staff members who are residing in the campus should be involved in planting saplings,” he urged.

He thanked the Forest Department for donating the saplings and informed that the planting that started onAugust 15 would continue till the campus was fully covered with trees.
