London: India is the world’s most dangerous country for women because of high risk of sexual violence and slave labour, according to a new survey which showed, once more, that very little progress has been made in India on women’s safety.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation on Tuesday released its results of a survey of 550 experts on women’s issues. The survey found that India to be the most dangerous nation for sexual violence against women, as well as human trafficking for domestic work, forced labor, forced marriage and sexual slavery, CNN reported.

India was also the most dangerous country in the world for cultural traditions that impact women. India was the fourth most dangerous country for women in the same survey seven years ago, the report said. “India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women … rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated,” said Manjunath Gangadhara, a Karnataka government official, was quoted as saying by NDTV.

War-torn Afghanistan and Syria ranked second and third in the survey followed by Somalia and Saudi Arabia. The only western nation in the top 10 was the United States, which ranked joint third.
