Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi who started his political career as transport and public works minister in 1967 went on to become the leader of DMK party in the year 1969 and donned the mantle of CM in Tamilnadu five times. During his tenure, he introduced many welfare schemes including farmers market , abolishment of hand pulled rickshaws, slum clearance in major cities and free electricity for farmers.
