Coimbatore : Process is to be in place on how a person can be declared brain dead, helping organ donation, a top official in Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan) said on Sunday.

The Central and State Governments has brought in a highly structured process for organ donation, TRANSTAN member secretary Dr K Kanthimathy said.

“Processes are in place as to how a person can be declared brain dead and there is a strict approach to the allotment of organs as well,” Kanthimathy said during a function organised by CII and Yi “Gift an Organ” to create awareness about organ donation.

Chennai-based Transtan is the government body, guiding, facilitating and strictly monitoring every step of organ donation, Kanthimatny said. Once the process was in place, most of the doubts people had could be cleared.

CII-Coimbatore Zone healthcare costs Dr R V Ramani said this most humanitarian initiative was nothing short of “giving life” and through that eight different people could be saved, he added.

While eye and skin donations can happen after the death of an individual within the stipulated time of six hours, other organs like heart, know and liver could be donated after a person was declared brain dead, Ramani said..

With lifestyle changes, there was an increase in the number of diseases like diabetes, and organ failure at a relatively younger age was high, Ramani said.

Almost all leading hospitals in Coimbatore participated in the event and appealed to the public that they should spread awareness and come forward to be involved in this.
