Cyclone Gaja makes landfall in Tamil Nadu

Cyclone Gaja crossed the Tamil Nadu coast on Friday between 12.30 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam on Friday

It had a wind speed of Nearly 110 kmph  gusting up to 120 kmph when cyclone made a landfall.

Hundreds of trees were uprooted in few districts affected by the cyclone. The government said it was making all efforts to remove the fallen trees.

The Indian Meteoroligcal Department said heavy rains is likely to occur over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala. Isolated rain is likely to occur over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, north Kerala and and interiors of south Karnataka.

 Gale wind speed reaching 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph very likely in central parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts during next six hours. The Met department also forecast that in other parts of Tamil Nadu wind speeds will be between 60 to 80 kmph.

The government had taken several measures to pr vent loss to human lives. So far there have been no reports of casualties  though extensive damage is feared to electricity and communications networks in the affected regions.
