Bank manager absconding for the last 14 months arrested

Coimbatore : A Branch manager of State Bank of India (SBI) wanted in connection with defrauding the customers and bank has been arrested, after being at large for the last 14 months.

A former SBI Zonal Manager Joseph Christi, had taken over as manager of Kalapatti branch and opened an account in the name of an existing customer, police said.

Christi had transferred Rs.17 lakh to this account from the account of other customers and also by overdraft. As the bank came to know about the fraud, Christi was placed under suspension and a complaint registered on November 27, 2017.The accused was absconding since then.

On specific information, the city police rushed to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and nabbed Christi on January 23 and brought him to the city yesterday.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the accused defrauded nearly Rs.26 lakh from the bank. He was later produced before the jurisdictionary court and lodged in the Central jail.
