Hospitals in Coimbatore organise various programmes on Cancer awareness

Coimbatore : Coimbatore based Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) on Monday launched an exclusive Cancer Awareness on Wheels and Digital Cancer Awareness Table Top, to mark the World Cancer day being observed on February 4.
The Digital Awareness Van with an Android LED screen installed at its rear windscreen and is connected to a water proof speaker system installed in the rear of the van.
The van has a WiFi hotspot which transmits the internet to the LED screen so that the instructor demonstrates to the public the awareness on YouTube channel, e-books, Websites, Android Applications, Animated videos which were created by the institute in the last ten years.
Thereby making all of the digital awareness modalities easily accessible to public, SRIOR Director, Dr P Guhan said on the sidelines of the launch.
There is also an USB drive with all these stored so that when the van goes offline due to connectivity issues the instructor uses the USB drive to share the same. The van has a built in microphone system which allows the instructor to teach the public to use the applications in Google Play Store created by SRIOR for various cancer awareness like Tobacco cessation app and breast cancer awareness app, Guhan said.
Flagging off the van, Deputy Commissioner of Police (L and O), Balaji Saravanan said that the awareness has to reach the nook and corner of rural and remote areas, so that it has bigger impact on rural population.
Meanwhile, Gem Hospital and Research Centre had honoured 100 warriors of Cancer (survived various types of cancer and leading happy life) as part of the day.
The beneficiaries participated in the programme were provided with health benefit cards and a citation by Hospital Chairman, Dr C Palanivelu.
Meanwhile Chairman of VGM Hospital, V G Mohanprasad told reporters that everyone has to undergo master health check every year to detect whether they are suffering from cancer.
If someone in the family has cancer at the age of 50 years, especially colon or breast cancer then the blood relatives should undergo screening, he advised after a function in the hospital.
