BJP says Karnataka govt lost majority, ask governor not to read speech it prepared

Bangalore : The opposition BJP in Karnataka on Wednesday mounted pressure to dislodge the HD Kumaraswamy government and raised a ruckus inside the assembly disrupting the speech of Governor Vajubhai Vala. The governor was giving the customary opening address to the joint sitting of the state legislature.

It was being widely speculated if all the Congress MLAs would attend the house and support the coalition government as there were murmurs of revolt as also reports that some of them might resign, bringing the magic number down to enable the BJP have a go at government formation after dislodging the government.

On Wednesday, the BJP leaders who trooped into the well of the house, alleged that the government had lost majority and that the government should not read the speech of a government that lost its legitimacy.

“You are made to read lies, so please don’t read it,” BJP members said. However, the governor continued with his speech amid the growing intensity and noise of BJP protests and sloganeering.

“We don”t want a bundle of lies to be read. Down down… the government that has lost majority and trust,” the BJP MLAs shouted. The governor then concluded his speech saying that it should be deemed as read. Kumaraswamy, who also holds finance portfolio, he is slated to present the state budget on February 8.

According to reports, nearly 10 Congress MLAs were absent at the assembly today. While the Congress leaders expressed confidence that they would be in the house when needed, the BJP side maintained that the government was about to fall anytime soon.
