Kumaraguru Institutions successfully hosted the International Summit on Young Leaders for a Climate Smart Future, bringing together global academic leaders, policymakers, and youth voices to co-create sustainable solutions for emerging climate challenges. The summit served as a global platform for collective leadership, underscoring the urgent need for innovation, systemic reimagining, and youth-driven climate action.

The event marked a significant strengthening of the strategic partnership between Kumaraguru Institutions and the University of Reading, United Kingdom, a globally recognised leader in climate science and policy research. The collaboration aims to empower the next generation to move beyond awareness and actively engineer a climate-smart future through shared responsibility and academic excellence.
Delivering the welcome address, Dr. Vijila Edwin Kennedy, Director, Kumaraguru Global Engagement Office, highlighted the pivotal role of youth in shaping a sustainable world. She emphasized that the summit’s three core pillars—Young Leaders, Climate Smart, and Future—are critical in building resilience for tomorrow.

Dr.Kennedy also noted Kumaraguru’s transformation from a traditional academic institution into a purpose-driven “Collective”, integrating institutions, individuals, and initiatives to drive meaningful regional and national impact.

Young India Climate Action Network Launched

In his presidential address, Shri Shankar Vanavarayar, President, Kumaraguru Institutions, called for a distinct climate-smart development pathway for India and officially announced the launch of the Young India Climate Action Network (Y-I CAN). The initiative is designed to empower youth to engineer sustainable, locally relevant solutions through collaboration and innovation.

Highlighting the partnership with the University of Reading during its centenary year,Vanavarayar introduced the concept of “reverse engineering” climate solutions, advocating the adaptation of global best practices to suit the needs of the Global South. He stressed that India must innovate its growth models to avoid the financial and ecological costs of outdated development paths.

India to Lead the Next Century of Global Leadership

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Caroline Baylon, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), University of Reading, UK, stated that India will be the heart of future global leadership. She described the Kumaraguru–Reading partnership as a call to action to co-create sustainable solutions, placing students at the intersection of nature and industry.

Dr.Baylon announced major academic initiatives for Kumaraguru students, including credit-transfer semester-abroad programs, access to global summer schools across the UK, Malaysia, and South Africa, fast-track admissions for postgraduate programs, and scholarships worth up to £10,000. She emphasized that the partnership is rooted in a long-term vision of “Partnering for the Planet.”

Climate Crisis Is a Leadership Challenge
Addressing the summit, Prof. Elena Spasova, Dean, Henley Business School, UK, asserted that climate change is no longer merely a scientific issue but a leadership and business challenge. Calling for a shift from extraction to restoration, she highlighted the need to decarbonize without compromising human wellbeing and development.She emphasized that future leaders must be equipped with skills in carbon markets, sustainable supply chains, and ethical governance, reiterating that profit and planet are partners, not competitors.

MoU Signed to Formalise Global Collaboration

The inaugural session witnessed the formal signing and exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kumaraguru Institutions and the University of Reading. The agreement was signed by Shri Shankar Vanavarayar and Dr. Caroline Baylon, reinforcing a shared commitment to joint initiatives in education, research, innovation, and climate action.

To mark the University of Reading’s centenary, a special memento was presented to Dr. Baylon, symbolising academic excellence and the deepening of global ties.
