The GRD School of Commerce and International Business, under Dr.GRD College of Science, Coimbatore, hosted an impactful Masterclass titled “Do Talk to Strangers” featuring internationally acclaimed speaker, author and leadership coach Kerrie Phipps from Australia.

The session revolved around a powerful yet simple idea — that meaningful conversations with strangers can open unexpected doors of opportunity and significantly influence personal and professional growth. Addressing students and faculty members,Kerrie Phipps emphasized that communication is not merely a soft skill but a transformative capacity that shapes confidence, expands identity, and determines access to opportunities.

Conversations as Gateways to Growth

Highlighting the true essence of networking, she reframed it from a transactional exercise into a relational investment rooted in curiosity, authenticity and openness. According to her, many life-changing opportunities arise not solely through formal channels, but through genuine conversations that evolve into mentorships, collaborations and valuable insights.

Courage in Everyday Actions

The speaker presented courage not as a grand gesture but as a series of small, intentional steps — introducing oneself, asking questions, or initiating dialogue. These seemingly minor actions, she noted, gradually build confidence and reduce fear over time.

Growth Beyond Comfort Zones

Acknowledging the hesitation individuals often experience when stepping outside their comfort zones,Phipps explained that discomfort is often a sign of growth. Acting despite uncertainty, she said, is the discipline that transforms hesitation into progress.

Human Connection in a Digital Era

In today’s digitally dominant environment, she stressed the importance of authentic, face-to-face communication. Active listening, attentiveness and emotional intelligence remain foundational qualities of effective leadership and lasting influence.

The session concluded with a strong message that confidence is cultivated through repeated engagement rather than waiting to “feel ready.” Students were encouraged to view strangers not as uncertainties, but as potential collaborators in growth and opportunity.

The intellectually stimulating and personally relevant Masterclass was organized by Dr.K.K.Ramachandran, Vice Principal and Director,GRD School of Commerce and International Business, leaving students with a renewed perspective on the power of meaningful human connection.
