The 9th anniversary of Idhayangal Trust, which has been continuously working at the grassroots level to manage Type 1 diabetes, was successfully held at Kikani School in R.S. Puram, Coimbatore.

At the event, the Founder of the Trust, Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan, elaborated on the medical services carried out over the past nine years, collaborative initiatives implemented with the government, and the new medical technologies planned to be introduced in the future.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Krishnan Swaminathan stated that children who were once at risk of losing their lives due to Type 1 diabetes are now continuing their school and college education with proper and timely treatment. Some have also started working and earning with confidence. Over the past nine years, the Trust has been supporting more than 4,000 children affected by Type 1 diabetes across India. Advanced medical support, including high-quality insulin, glucose monitoring devices, glucose strips, and insulin pumps, is being provided to underprivileged children.

With the aim of early detection and treatment of the disease, the Trust’s services are currently extended across 38 districts in Tamil Nadu. At present, diabetes treatment centres are operational in 10 districts, and there are plans to expand these services to 8 more districts, including Madurai, Salem, and Karur, in the coming year.

With the support of advanced medical equipment available at these centres, multiple test results such as kidney function, thyroid levels, and anemia can be obtained quickly from just a single drop of blood, he added.

As part of the celebration, awards and recognitions were presented to children who are successfully managing Type 1 diabetes, children who have recovered from cancer and other illnesses, along with their parents and volunteers.

The event was attended by donors, doctors, Rotary Club members, and members of the public, making the occasion a grand success.
