NEHRU GROUP OF INSTITUTIONS CELEBRATES ONAM WITH GRAND CULTURAL FESTIVITIES

Coimbatore: Nehru Group of Institutions (NGI), Tamil Nadu, celebrated the vibrant festival of Onam with grandeur and traditional splendour across its 16 institutions, bringing together more than 10,000 students, faculty members and staff in a spectacular celebration of Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. The celebrations beautifully captured the essence of Onam through a colourful combination of traditional art forms, music, dance, food and festive customs. The campuses came alive with enthusiasm as students and faculty members participated in various programmes with great excitement.
The celebration began with a grand welcome to Maveli (King Mahabali), accompanied by the energetic beats of Singari Melam, creating a festive procession and setting the tone for the celebrations. One of the major attractions was the beautifully crafted Pookalam, with students displaying their creativity through elaborate floral designs. The cultural programmes showcased the richness of Kerala’s performing arts, including the vibrant Pulikali, graceful Mohiniyattam, magnificent Kathakali and traditional Thiruvathira. The colourful costumes, expressive performances and rhythmic movements captivated the audience and provided students with an opportunity to experience Kerala’s diverse artistic traditions.
The traditional Onasadhya, served on banana leaves, was another significant highlight. Students, faculty members and staff came together to enjoy the grand vegetarian feast, reflecting the core values of Onam — sharing, equality, togetherness and prosperity.
The energetic Singari Melam performances added a special festive atmosphere throughout the celebration, with the powerful beats of traditional percussion instruments drawing enthusiastic participation and applause from the NGI community.
The celebration also provided a platform for students from diverse backgrounds to come together and celebrate the spirit of unity in diversity. The celebration concluded with joy and enthusiasm, creating cherished memories for the entire NGI family and reaffirming the institution’s commitment to promoting culture, tradition, inclusivity and holistic student development.
