GRD School of Commerce and International Business (SCIB), Dr. G.R.D. College of Science, Coimbatore, in association with the GRD Institute of Management, organised “Bystander to Lifesaver 2026”, a Basic Life-Saving Skills and CPR Training Programme, at R.D. Hall on October 1.
The programme was conducted by medical experts from Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, in association with the American Heart Association (AHA), with the objective of equipping students with essential life-saving skills and enabling them to respond effectively during medical emergencies.
The programme featured Dr.Rakhi Gaur, AIIMS Deoghar; Dr.Divay Trika, AHA Consultant; Prof. Saisrekha, Vice Principal, Ganga College of Nursing; and Aparna M.A.,Project Operation Officer, Ganga Hospital as chief guests/resource persons.
The experts highlighted the importance of immediate CPR by bystanders during cardiac arrest, explaining that timely chest compressions can help maintain blood circulation until professional medical assistance arrives.Students received both theoretical and hands-on training.
Using CPR mannequins, they practised correct hand positioning, posture, compression technique, rhythm and depth under the supervision of medical professionals. The training was led by four doctors and supported by more than 20 nurses, who provided individual guidance to participants.
The students were trained in essential CPR procedures, including ensuring scene safety, placing the person on a firm surface, positioning the hands at the centre of the chest and performing chest compressions at the recommended rate of 100–120 compressions per minute and an approximate depth of 5 cm for adults.
The practical exposure helped students gain greater confidence, presence of mind and preparedness to respond during emergencies.
The programme also emphasised the importance of social responsibility and encouraging others to learn basic life-saving skills.The event was organised under the leadership of Dr. K. K. Ramachandran, Vice Principal and Director, GRD School of Commerce and International Business and GRD Institute of Management, Dr.G.R.D. College of Science, Coimbatore.
The programme concluded with students gaining practical knowledge and confidence in responding appropriately during critical medical emergencies.
