Tirupur has successfully managed to plant 1.25 lakh saplings within 100 days as part of its ‘Vanathukkul Tiruppur’ (Tiruppur inside a forest) campaign. The campaign was launched by ‘VETRY,’ an NGO committed to preserving nature.

As homage to the late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the NGO had set a target to plant one lakh saplings in four months, which started on August 23. But, the target was achieved in 100 days. The event was celebrated at a function attended by the Tamil Nadu Forest Minister, MSM Anandan, and senior government officials.

Local industrialists have contributed Rs.6 crores towards the maintenance of these saplings for the next two years. The movement has inspired schools and colleges in the area to create a ‘green cover’ in the region in the next five years.

Textile industries have also pledged to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge in their processing units. The dyeing units of Tirupur have a daily recycling capacity of about eight crore litres of water. The mechanism, costing Rs.600 crores, reuses the salt water that is used for dyeing. Despite the fact that the government allows the factories to discharge water of 2,100 TDS hardness, Tirupur factories have installed the system. The government is now recommending the system to the rest of the country.
