The leaders of all the political parties have turned down district collector Archana Patnaik’s appeal to recommend an all-women constituency.
The Election Commission had recently announced assembly polls for five states. The elections in Tamil Nadu will be held on May 16. The government officials have already started preparing for the big day. With the Code of Conduct coming into force, an all-party meeting, called by the district collector and Chief Election Commissioner of Coimbatore, was held at the District Collectorate.
The code of conduct to be adhered during the upcoming elections, were explained at the meeting. The political parties were requested to strictly adhere to the codes of conduct, including, procuring permission for public meetings, and maintaining fair details for election expenditures.
Besides, the District Collector Archana Patnaik appealed to the leaders to recommend an all-women constituency. She insisted that they recommend one among the ten constituencies of Coimbatore district as an all-women constituency, in which, the complete administration of the election, starting from booth agent to the Chief Election Officer, be taken over only by women. She added that the authorities are ready to provide the required support on behalf of the government.
The leaders of various political parties said that it was not possible because they had already assigned booth agents and many other representatives. They added that the time left is not sufficient to make the necessary arrangements to hold such an all-women polling constituency.
The District Collector replied that was possible to have an all-women constituency in a district like Coimbatore. She also asked them that if it was possible in a state like Bihar, which is considered to be among the backward states in the country, why is it not possible in a developed state like Tamil Nadu.
Various government officials, including the District Police Commissioner Mr. A. Amalraj, District Superintendent of Police Ms. R.V. Ramya Bharathy, and the District Revenue Officer Mr. T Christhudoss participated in the meeting.
