Rain brings cheer to district farmers

There is adequate stock of seeds and fertilizers for the farmers as Coimbatore district received adequate rainfall during the monsoon, District Collector Archana Patnaik told farmers on Friday.

Following the farmers grievances day meeting at the collectorate, she said: “The average rainfall of Coimbatore district is about 683 mm. Meanwhile, the district received 414 mm rainfall till June end. The water level at the reservoirs have increased and the areas of Anaimalai and Pollachi received better rainfall.”

According to her, the current water level of Sholayar Dam is at 149 feet and it is 116 feet and 39 feet respectively at Aliyar Dam and Parambikulam dam.

She said: “In order to provide seeds for the farmers, there is adequate stock at government and private godowns including 20 tonnes of groundnut, 10 tonnes each in green gram, toor dhal and black gram, 19 tonnes of maize and a tonne of Kuthiraivali.”

“Similarly, about 6690 metric tonnes of various fertilizers are in stock in the district.” she added.

The accessed total crop cultivation area in the district was about 8908 hectares including 4064 for cholam (corn), 212 hectares for maize, 1500 hectares for cereal crops, 2500 hectares for oil seed crops and 462 hectares for vegetable cultivation.

She said that 8213 farmers were sanctioned with crop loans of Rs 1318 crores from nationalized and cooperative banks in the district. She called upon the farmers to make use of the opportunities and she recommended action on the petitions received from farmers at the meeting.
