First level screening of teas for the 12th Edition of the Golden Leaf India Awards: Southern Tea Competition (TGLIA) was held at United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI), Coonoor, on Friday.

It had received 155 entries from 52 estates and companies. Conceived by UPASI in collaboration with Tea Board of India, TGLIA had immensely helped to showcase the quality teas of various regions of South India for the last 12 years.

The first level screening of teas took place with a six-member panel, representing major tea packagers, exporters and leading brokers, evaluated the teas, TGLIA Organising Committee Convenor, V. Unnikrishnan, said.

The process of selecting the best teas from various agro-climatic regions was based on a multilayer screening process using a scoring system that captured the various quality attributes of tea, such as dry leaf appearance, infused or spent leaf appearance, liquor attributes such as colour, aroma, briskness and strength, in an objective manner.

The teas qualifying the first level of screening would also be screened for pesticide residue parameters and heavy metals in the NABL accredited laboratory of UPASI Tea Research Foundation.

The final tasting session is scheduled to be held in Dubai coinciding with the 6th Global Dubai Tea Forum (GDTF) from April 5 – 7, Unnikrishnan said.
