The Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has forecasted a price of Rs.1,400 to Rs.1,500 per quintal for maize during the summer months. The forecast is based on the prices prevailing in Udumalpet Regulated Market over the last 13 years.

The maize produced in the state meets only 50 percent of the local demand. The rest is procured from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Bihar. Most poultry farms procure and stock maize for chicken feed from Bihar because the quality of grains from the state is far better than the rest.

Maize is cultivated in nine million hectares with a production of 21 million tonnes in India. The major maize growing states in the country are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Tuticorin, and Salem are the main maize-producing districts in Tamil Nadu.

Due to the falling production, maize was also imported from Ukraine and Brazil this year.
