The members of the Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers Union have alleged that the construction labourers, working on the new building for the district collectorate, are being paid only Rs.350 as against the stipulated Rs.545 daily wages.

In a letter to the District Collector, Archana Patnaik, the union district general secretary, N. Selvaraj sought immediate intervention and an inquiry.

Selvaraj said that he had talked to most of the labourers at the construction site, who told him that they were being paid only Rs.350 for the last few months.

The government has already enhanced the daily wages by Rs.20, increasing it to Rs.565, he said. He added that the building contractors were cheating the workers by only paying them Rs.350 a day, and has requested the collector to look into the issue.
