Chennai-based Schizophrenia Research Foundation and city based Kongunadu Mananala Arakattalai would jointly open a day care centre for the mentally challenged. While the former has sponsored the centre, the latter would run it.

Shivanjali at Vadavalli would initially take in 40 people, who would be given training in improving their language and vocabulary and communication skills. They would also be trained in jewellery making, plate making and painting.

“There would be occupational therapy also for those who require it,” a press release said.

The training would be given between 10 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on working days. Shivanjali would also start an employment exchange and those who undergo training would be registered with it. Depending on the skill and the industrial requirements, these inmates would be employed in mills, factories, godowns, supermarkets and hotels.
