Life is precious – man or animal!

Madras Veterinary College in Chennai helped save the life of an anaemic Pomeranian in Mumbai, thanks to the animal blood bank set up in 2010.

The bank has 76 registered members with 25 active donors, said Professor and head of Department at the college, Dr S Prathapan.

In response to a call yesterday from James Dhillon of Mumbai seeking urgent blood donation for his pet whose haemoglobin levels had dropped to dangerous levels due to chronic infection, Murali’s pet dog Simba, a 75-kg Great Dane, was rushed to help.

Dr Prathapan said Dhillion flew to Chennai and returned to Mumbai the same day carrying the 300 ml of blood packed in a freezer. He had to get special permission from airport authorities to transport the blood, which helped save his five-year-old pet.

Dr Prathapan said the animal blood bank marked its anniversary on June 14, and got encouraging response from animal owners who expressed their wish to register their pets.
