Six persons got a new lease of life after the vital organs of a brain dead engineering student were transplanted on them.

Twenty-one-year-old Rajini, final year student of Kumaraguru College of Technology here, was thrown out of his two-wheeler and his head hit the road divider on July 10. He was rushed to the Government Hospital for first aid and was later shifted to Kovai Medical Centre Hospital.

Though Rajini underwent various surgical and medical management, he did not respond much and was declared brain dead yesterday, a release from KMCH said.

Rajini’s parents, Ramaswamy, a farmer and Alamelu, in spite of the loss, came forward to donate their son’s organs, the release added.

The heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, eyes and skin were harvested today. While the liver and one kidney were transplanted to patients at KMCH, lungs were sent to Chennai hospitals, another kidney, skin and eyes were sent to other private hospitals in Coimbatore.

“My son was an active blood donor. His loss is unbearable. By donating his organs, we felt it would help somebody to live a full life,” his father was quoted as saying.
