Mettupalayam GH turns 132 years old this month

The Government Hospital (GH) Mettupalayam turns 132 on August 25 this year. To commemorate the anniversary celebrations, GH Mettupalayam plans to release a postal stamp and a postal cover. Those interested in designing the stamp can get in touch with the hospital authorities.
Speaking to Covai Post, Dr. S. Seralathan, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), said, “We are inviting the public to design a stamp for our 132nd anniversary celebrations. The best design will be selected and made into a postal stamp and a postal cover.”
The impressive hospital began its journey as a small dispensary in the year 1884, during the British rule, on a five-acre land donated by a philanthropist from the Gowda community. Subsequently, in the year 1963, another member of the Gowda clan was instrumental in setting up the Out Patient (OP) block on the same five-acre land. In 1972, under the leadership of Jothy V., the then Minister of Health, the in-patient facility was upgraded. Each year, the medical and non-medical staff of the GH Mettupalayam celebrate August 25 as Hospital Day.
132 years after its inception, the GH Mettupalayam is now a 116-bedded hospital with departments like ENT, Medical, Surgical, Gynaecology, Dentistry and Paediatrics. On any given day, at least 1,500 out-patients visit the hospital. The hospital conducts at least one post-mortem every day.
