Thanjavur: A sanitary inspector at the Maharnonbu Chavadi division of the Thanjavur Corporation was caught red handed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs.2000 to issue a no objection certificate.

According to sources, Manikandan of Saliya street in Ammapettai had not registered the death of his mother with the corporation. His mother passed away in 2008. He applied for a ‘no objection certificate’ with the divisional office of Thanjavur Corporation in May 2016.

The sanitary inspector, Thomas Bernandshaw, however, kept dodging Manikandan without issuing the certificate.

Manikandan approached the sanitary inspector yesterday and asked for the certificate. The sanitary inspector reportedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2,000 for issuing the NOC.

Manikandan brought it to the notice of the DVAC in Thanjavur. Based on his complaint, the DVAC sleuths registered a case and planned to nab Bernandshaw.

As instructed, Manikandan went to the corporation’s divisional office at Maharnonbu Chavadi and gave the bribe to Bernandshaw. When the official took the money, the DVAC sleuths, led by DSP Sridhar, caught him red-handed and recovered the money.
