A 21-year-old civil engineer, who was declared brain dead, became instrumental in giving new lease of life to six persons, after his vital organs were transplanted to them.

Yuvaraj, hailing from Dharapuram in Tirupur district, had just completed his engineering degree programme from Jai Sriram College of Engineering and Technology, Tirupur. He met with an accident in March and was recovering. But he developed some complications in the head and began to frequently lose consciousness. He was brought to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital on August 26, and was under treatment, but, according to the hospital nephrologist, Dr Chezian, he was declared brain dead last evening, after he failed to respond to treatment.

“The brain death was confirmed twice in an interval of six hours by a panel of doctors. Yuvaraj has suffered brain death due to massive posterior circulation stroke,” Dr. Ashokan, neurologist, said.

Yuvaraj’s family went ahead and decided to donate his organs.

A team of doctors harvested heart, liver, two kidneys and two corneas this morning, the hospital’s press release said. One kidney was transplanted to a patient in Ramakrishna Hospital, and the other kidney was taken to KG hospital in Coimbatore. The corneas were sent to Sankara Eye Hospital, and the liver to the PSG Hospitals.

“Ramakrishna Hospital is the Guinness record holder for “the most people to sign up as organ donors in eight hours,” the press release said.
