In a first of its kind noble initiative, bakery chain French Loaf, sold the longest photo cake in Coimbatore for Rs 9 lakh, and donated the money to charity at the Brook Fields Mall here on Sunday.

Weighing a whopping 600kg and stretching to 60m, the eggless cake, created as a part of the ‘Daan Utsav’, bore the photographs of legendary musicians, including A R Rahman, Ilayaraja, M S Viswanathan, S P Balasubramaniam, Hariharan, Mano, K S Chithra, Janaki and Srinivas, and music CD covers.

Reynold Fernandes, CEO of Oriental Cuisine Private Limited, that runs the French Loaf chain said that the company had been organising such events in Chennai for five years. “We have made 100m cakes in Chennai, but could only manage 60m here, yet the response had been very good,” he added.

He informed that the money collected is to be donated to Dean Foundation, Sankara Eye Hospitals and other NGOs. “We select NGOs based on their charity work and choose different organisations each year,” Fernandes said.

Cutting the cake, singer Srinivas expressed his appreciation for the initiative.

Regaling the audience with some hit songs, including Kanava Illai Kaatra, Mangalyam Thanthunanena, along with his daughter Sharanya Srinivas, Srinivas also shared how his journey as a singer started from Coimbatore. “I first ‘Roja’ here and was enchanted by the music of Rahman. I travelled the streets of Coimbatore listening to the songs. Only then I moved to Chennai and now I am singer,” he added.
