More than 2,500 workers of various political parties and farmers were arrested at different railway stations in the district and the neighbouring Tirupur district and in Udhgamandalam, while attempting to stage rail roko in protest against the Centre’s refusal to constitute the Cauvery Management Board, as directed by the Supreme Court.

According to police, over 600 workers, belonging to the MDMK, the CPI, the CPI(M), the VCK, the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and some other organisations assembled near city railway station. When they started proceeding towards the station, police prevented them, even as some workers attempted to jump over barricades, resulting in pull and push between police and them, leading to some tense moments.

However, the situation was brought under control and all the workers and leaders were arrested, police said.

Similarly, DMK MLA, N. Karthik and scores of party workers were held at Singanallur Railway station, when they tried to stage a rail roko. More arrests were made at Pollachi, Mettupalayam and Sulur Railway Stations in the district.

Nearly 1,000 workers belonging to various political parties and farmers were held at nearby Tirupur and Udhagamandalam.
