Ooty: An uneasy calm prevailed at Kandhal in Udhagamandalam today, following burning of two auto rickshaws, one belonging to a Hindu Munnani functionary.

According to police, the north town secretary of Hindu Munnani, Nagaraj, runs an auto rickshaw for livelihood. Last night he had parked his vehicle near his house.

Some people in the neighbourhood noticed the vehicle on fire around 4 a.m. and alerted him. Nagaraj rushed to the spot and later lodged a complaint with police.

While Nagaraj’s vehicle was completely burnt, another auto rickshaw parked nearby burnt partially, triggering tension in the area.

A large number of police was deployed in the area, being a communally sensitive one, to prevent any eventualities.
Investigations are on.
