Rs 50 lakh in cash seized on way to Thanjavur

Thanjavur: A flying squad seized Rs 50 lakh cash from a car that was transporting the amount without documents at Keezha Vasthachavadi in Thanjavur last night.

The team, led by Additional Block Development Officer Raja, was conducing vehicle checks in the Keezha Vasthachavadi area to enforce the model code of conduct for the November 19 elections to the Thanjavur Assembly constituency when it stumbled upon the car that came from Mannargudi.

When the flying squad officials stopped the car and conducted a search they found Rs 50 lakh inside. Upon enquiry, the occupants of the vehicle informed the team that the money was being transported from the Mannargudi branch of the Karur Vysya Bank to its Thanjavur branch, and showed documents for the transporting the amount.

However, there was no mention of the vehicle’s registration number in the documents; also, the huge amount was being transported from Mannargudi without a police escort. Subsequently, the vehicle and the money were seized and taken to the taluk office in Thanjavur.

On the instructions of the collector, tahsildar Gurumurthy told the occupants of the vehicle to produce proper documents with the vehicle number mentioned, to claim the money again. The seized money was deposited in the sub treasury.
